I'm Tyler Norris, a senior in Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State University. I'm from Farmington, Minnesota, which is roughly 30 minutes southeast of the Twin Cities. I enjoy working on practical engineering projects that combine the technical aspects of engineering design and analysis with creativity and challenges. Working on a design project, whether I'm building a clean CAD model, working on a prototype, or analyzing simulation results, while learning, has meaning and purpose is which keeps me motivated.
At ISU, I’ve contributed to team-based projects like senior design efforts, focused on a modular UAV payload system, where I got to combine technical work with system-level thinking. I’ve built experience with tools like SolidWorks, Python, ANSYS and many more through a combination of coursework, certifications, and hands-on projects. I am continually looking for ways to apply and expand my skills beyond the classroom.
I’m hoping to get involved in the space industry after graduation (Would love to work on Spacesuits like the xEMU). Ideally, somewhere that values practical design, testing, and forward-looking engineering. This portfolio is a snapshot of what I’ve done so far and where I’m aiming to go next
When I am not busy with a design project or learning a new tool, I like to get outside and stay active. I really enjoy lifting, playing disc golf, and being outside when the weather is nice, so I spend a lot of time doing those things. I also really enjoy watching sports, as it is my way to unwind and reset before an almost always busy week.
Having a variety of activities keeps me balanced and helps me recharge, which I think is just as important as being technically sharp. It also gives me some space to get more creative when I am not in front of a computer.
ISU Disc Golf Clubs D1 (Red) and D2 (Black) teams for the 2024 Midwest Conference Championship event in Illinois. Left to Right; Keith, Cael, Kester, Myself for D1 and Drake, Gus, Trevor, Michael for D2.
Here I am deadlifting at an ISU Weight Club event called Fall Feast of Power. This was my first time competing, and I hit my goal of a 1200lb lift total with this 504lb deadlift. There were three lifts: Squat, Bench, and Deadlift, all held to USAPL standards.
Photo of baby me. Football has always been my favorite sport to play, watch, or talk about. I've been a die-hard Patriots fan from a very young age. I also always watch the Cyclones play on Saturdays.
If you’re interested in more of what keeps me balanced outside of engineering, you’ll find a few extra snapshots below. These photos give a better sense of the routines and hobbies I care about. It’s not just about stepping away from the work; it’s about staying sharp by doing things that keep me engaged in a different way.
